Gallery Attendant
Casual, Part-Time
Starts: September 13, 2026 (flexible)
Schedule: Evenings and weekends required
Wage: $18.50/hour

The Gallery Attendant is responsible for welcoming visitors and helping create a friendly, safe, and engaging experience at the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington. The role includes monitoring gallery spaces, answering visitor questions, and supporting the general care and presentation of the gallery.
Responsibilities include:
Welcoming visitors and providing information about current exhibitions, programs, and events
Monitoring gallery spaces and ensuring artwork and visitors are safe
Answering questions and assisting visitors as needed
Maintaining a clean, organized, and welcoming public space
Supporting opening receptions, events, and other gallery activities as required
Completing basic opening and closing procedures when scheduled, including locking and securing the gallery
Answering phone calls and taking messages, including artists, contractors, etc.
Requirements:
Must be able to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Screening
Friendly, reliable, and comfortable working independently
Comfortable speaking with the public
Interest in art and community programming

About the VAC
The Visual Arts Centre of Clarington (VAC) is a not-for-profit art gallery and arts education centre in Bowmanville, ON. The VAC is dedicated to delivering contemporary art to the Clarington Community, the wider Durham Region, and beyond. It has a 47-year history of community engagement, connecting people of all ages and backgrounds in a creative place for artmaking and learning. The VAC occupies a four-story 1905 Mill, which holds exhibition and studio spaces, including a fully equipped pottery studio, a painting studio, and a rustic loft gallery.
Educational and public engagement programs are offered to kids, youth, and adults, while exhibitions of contemporary art show Canadian regional and national artists' works in various stages of their careers. The VAC is a safe space where ideas are exchanged, questions are asked, and connections are made.
