Supporting contemporary artistic innovation and education

As a cultural institution, we value diverse perspectives and experiences that add complexity and nuance to the questions and ideas we explore.

The VAC is committed to presenting challenging, dialogue-producing experiences whose purpose is to use art as a means of knowledge production and promotion to enact social change through meaningful discussions between the public, artists, and the institution.

We respect the diversity of ideas and support different perspectives through equity and inclusive practice.

Land Acknowledgement

The Visual Arts Centre of Clarington is situated on the treaty lands of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation. This has also been the traditional territories of the Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg, the signatory communities of the Williams Treaties, and other members of the broader Indigenous and Métis community. This territory is subject to the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, and allied confederacies to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. We are privileged to continue collaborating in this space—to work, teach, listen, and learn.

This acknowledgment is an action call to continue recognizing our commitments to each other as treaty partners across Mishiike Minisi. We witness settler institutions and systems of white supremacy continually challenge these agreements. We are responsible for ensuring that these values live and thrive throughout our organization as we work to deconstruct systemic inequities and platform Indigenous voices within our community.
